When Selena aged eighteen, she began her career as a member of a band formed by her father. Selena and her brothers Abraham junior and Sister Suzette were drummers. Selena sang for the group. Selena Y Los Dino band played at numerous wedding fairs, bars, dining establishments with her elder siblings. Selena, her sisters and their parents were very busy with the band. They didn't have any kind of childhood. Yet Abraham encouraged them to become dedicated musicians by his determination. Abraham senior was a member of the original band called Los Dinos. Selena Y Los Dinos formed officially in the year 1981. The band is the business of the Quintanillas and their main source to revenue. Quintanilla's parents persevered throughout the first years of financial hardships. Selena Y Los Dinos would become popular throughout the western states in the 80s. Selena's first success came in 1986 when she won prizes for Female Vocalist of The Year as well as Performer of The Year at the Tejano music awards. Selena Y Los Dinos became well-known and recognizable following this moment. The group appeared in many shows in Spanish, including El Show De Johnny Canales, Siempre En Domingo or Sabado Gigante.
